Welcome to Red Tail Hawk, our nature based education program! This program has a focus on providing students with high quality guided instruction and experiences in nature. It will incorporate many subjects from the Ontario Ministry of Education's curriculum as well as borrowing from other educational pedagogues (including, but not limited to Montessori and Reggio practices). I come to the program with full teaching credentials at the primary and junior levels, as well as experience teaching several outdoor education programs with various ages and groupings. I have eight years experience in the regular classroom, and over ten years of experience as a tutor (with a major focus on mathematics). My personal hobbies and interests include running, hiking, snowshoeing, downhill skiing, outdoor fitness, travel, and reading (especially about outdoor education), and of course time with my family! Thus far my career experiences and interests have lead me to follow my dream of starting a small nature based education program for children, so here we are!
As previously communicated the cost for families is $55 (+HST) per day of the program. Payments are made per term, payment information will be included in your registration package. Extended hours for the program will be made available upon request at an additional cost. Payments can be made through email transfer, cash, or cheque. The program fees are used to cover operational costs, required materials, and staff salaries. Payments guarantee your child's spot in the program. Absence from the program will not result in refund of the daily fee for your child. This is meant to ensure financial viability of the program for all students involved throughout the school year. If you wish to take extended holidays without paying for your child's position, students on the waiting list may be asked to fill your child's position. This could result in a loss of your child's position for the remainder of the school year.
Students will be required to bring their own lunch and snacks for each day they participate in the program. This will allow students to easily attain proper nutrition while following personal dietary preferences and restrictions. Proper nutrition is vital to your child's healthy participation! Organic food is encouraged as much as possible. Students must also have a water bottle packed each day that is easy to access and transport! Please communicate special dietary restrictions in the case that snacks are provided or shared by other families!
In the case of extreme weather conditions that are unsafe for transportation, programming for the day will be cancelled. In most cases it will be up to individual families to decide if they can safely travel to the program. During harsh weather conditions that are safe for the children to be outside, students will participate in a variety of indoor classroom activities combine with shorter intervals of time outside.
The school calendar will follow the same regular school holidays as the Blue Water District School Board (this is the same public school zone as the program). However, an additional week will be scheduled during March Break.
Red-tailed Hawk encourages an inclusive and respectful environment for individuals, the natural environment, and for each other. In the event that a student's behaviour is incompatible with the program, the program director reserves the right to end the student's involvement in the program. This may also hold true if the student is not suited to the amount of outdoor time required of them.
The code of conduct for the program will be to 'treat others as you wish to be treated!' In the event that the code is broken, students will receive gentle reminders of this. In the case of repeated offences, students and parents will be involved to create a suitable behaviour correction plan.
Please contact Shannon Foley directly and immediately if you do not wish for your child to be photographed during the program. Photos will be used as an educational tool, and to communicate with families who are enrolled in the program. Additional permission will be asked should photos be used for program promotion or advertisement.
Thank you for your respect and support of these program policies!
